Audi 100 Coupe S arrives back from chemical treatment

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]We’ve collected our 1974 Audi Coupe S from the guys at Prostrip who have successfully completed the chemical treatment on the body shell to remove all paint, rust and filler

The shell has now been treated with a coating of primer to preserve the metalwork until welding commences very soon.

1974 Audi 100 Coupe S Dipped

Our 1974 Audi 100 Coupe S has arrived back from Prostrip having been chemically dipped.

The next stage is to prime the car to help protect the body from the elements before we look to assess and start work on the body restoration.

Audi 100 Damaged Fuel Tank

With the challenges we will inevitably face later in this project, due to the rarity of the car and it’s parts, we have now discovered an unexpected hole in the fuel tank.

If a new/good second hand tank can not be sourced we will need to look at the options of stripping the existing tank back to bare metal, repair the damage before re-sealing internally and re-painting.

It is not a job that is impossible to complete, intact we have had to repair and re-seal various tanks in the past so it is not too daunting a task but like a lot of jobs when restoring a classic car, it is one that was not expected.

Change of approach to our 1974 Audi 100 Coupe Restoration

When you start out with a full restoration you have all good intentions to stick to the plan and stay within the schedule but inevitably incidents and issues arise that are not expected. Your plans therefore have to change.

This is definitely the case with our 1974 Audi 100 Coupe. We started off the week flying. Having the car almost stripped within days we were left with a car that looked relatively solid.

Once we started the welding stage this is where we began to uncover lots of hidden nasties, mainly with rotten panels and holes appearing from nowhere.

Before we continue with the project we have decided to arrange for the car to chemically dipped to ensure all areas are uncovered so we know exactly what we are dealing with.

Prostrip automotive restoration specialise in removing paint, rust and other contaminants from all types of vehicles and substrates involving steel and aluminium, ranging from classic cars to vintage motorcycles. Our vast in house facility ensures we have the correct and most cost effective process to suit your application.

Prostrip Ltd. has developed Phos-Strip™ a chemical dip process for the removal of paint, rust and underseal from complete car shells or individual panels. Its chemical formulation strips away contaminants from all internal and external areas.

As a company we are pleased to offer a complete service and are proud to have access to a body shop housed within a modern factory within a few 100 yards of the stripping facility. Dedicated to automotive refinishing we can offer customers a complete package from start to finish.

So we continue to strip the car of ALL components now as what’s left the car probably won’t be once the chemical process is complete.

Stripping our Audi 100 Coupe

Our Audi 100 Coupe S is well on the way to be completely stripped.

We’ve hit the ground running with this project and have managed to strip all major components from the car within a couple of days.

We have uncovered a couple of areas of rot that will need attention during the welding process and I’m sure there will be more to come as we progress with the restoration.

For now, the running gear is off and currently being blasted and refurbished and more of the interior and exterior is being removed, wrapped and stored.

Removing our Audi interior

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The strip down of our 1974 Audi 100 Coupe S is now in full swing. Andy has been set the task of removing our the interior today ready for the trimmer to take control.

At the minute, it has still not been decided on whether the colour change will be red with black interior or silver with red interior.

With the seats still to strip and the frame work to be refurbish we still have a little time until a decision needs to be made but for now, the work must commence as we have lots to do.

Refurbishing and detailing the engine

Phase 1 of our 1974 Audi 100 Coupe S restoration is now complete. The engine has been removed;

Before blasting the entire engine, cleaning and detailing, Pete has replaced the water pumps, gaskets, thermostat, fuel pump, distributor cap and rotor. He’s also changed the oil and filter.

Audi Engine Removed And Detailing Begins

The detailing of our 1974 Audi 100 Coupe engine has begun.

The engine has been removed and is now up in the air for Pete to work his magic on it. As the engine was running sweat prior to it’s removal this is not a full rebuild requirement. Gaskets and seals will be replaced as we strip to clean so this will be as far as we need to go on this one.

…other than a really good clean obviously!

Looking great so far, the cast is cleaning up fantastically so she’ll look like a new engine in no time.

During a full restoration we strongly encourage for lots of photographers to be taken of the strip down and rebuild process. Not only does this help with the rebuild of the vehicle but is also a very simple and effective way of building on the service and maintenance history of the vehicle. Let’s face it, we all like a car with history.

Here are a few images of our Audi 100 Coupe S strip down.

1974 Audi 100 Coupe S in for full restoration

Believed to be one of only 25 right hand drive vehicles remaining on the road in the UK and one of only 3000 ever produced, we’ve arrived back to Bridge Classic Cars HQ with our next product, this beautiful Audi 100 Coupe S.

A full restoration later in the year is planned but for now we need to get her on the ramp and fully assessed and for parts to start to be collected.
