Veteran Car Run – London to Brighton – November 2019

We were at the oldest celebration of motoring this Sunday 3rd November, the 2019 London to Brighton Veteran Car Run. More than 400 pre-1905 vehicles took took to the road.

Over 120 years since the first run in 1896, it was wonderful to see so many of these Veteran vehicles make the journey from Hyde Park in Central London to the coat of Brighton.

It was fantastic to see friends of Bridge Classic Cars, Stephen Norman MD Vauxhall Cars and Jeremy Townsend Director of Communications Vauxhall Cars crossing the finish line in Brighton. We also saw television presenter, Alan Titchmarsh in his veteran vehicle.

Gordon saying hello to Vauxhall’s MD, Stephen Norman and Director of Communications, Jeremy Townsend.

Max Chilton is a Britishracing driver currently racing for Carlin Motorsport in the IndyCar Series.

Prior to IndyCar, he competed in Formula One, driving for Marussia F1 in 2013 and 2014. In 2012, he raced in the GP2 series for Marussia-backed Carlin Motorsport.

Max started his ascent to Formula 1 in karting at the age of 10 where regular podiums saw him graduate to T Car racing at the age of 14 where he stayed until 2007, finishing second in the Championship with an impressive 7 race wins.

Aged 16, he made the move up to single-seater racing with the Arena International Team in the highly respected Formula 3 series. After moving to Hitech Racing in 2008, he secured a podium finish in the first race of the season at Oulton Park, taking second spot, an astonishing achievement at such a young age. His impressive form continued with front row qualifications and a maiden pole in Monza.

The following year, Chilton returned to Formula 3 and moved to Carlin, securing the front of the grid at the inaugural race of the season at Oulton Park before taking 2 poles at Silverstone in Round 2, complementing them with podium finishes. His first Formula 3 win came in Portugal after a dominating qualifying session. He finished the season 4th in the standings, topping it off with a second place finish and a win at Brands Hatch.

Towards the end of 2009, Max raced for Addax in his first outing in a GP2 car before securing a full time drive with the Ocean Racing Technology team for the 2010 season. GP2 has proved a popular and hugely successful breeding ground for future Formula 1 stars with many of today’s elite coming through its ranks, including among others, Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg.

It wasn’t long before Formula 1 came calling and in 2011, having impressed in GP2, Max was selected by the Force India F1 Team to take part in their Young Driver Test at one of the world’s most advanced and impressive tracks at Yas Marina Circuit, Abu Dhabi.

That same year, Max returned to GP2 with Carlin where he had previously raced in Formula 3. The partnership gained momentum and in 2012, the team received backing from the Marussia F1 Team. Shortly after, Max was celebrating second place in Malaysia and Monaco and an emphatic pole position in Hungary which he converted into his first race win. Another impressive position at the top of the podium came in Singapore on his way to 4th in the final standings and the highest placed British driver. During 2012, he impressed enough with the Marussia F1 Team at their Young Driver Test at Silverstone to be promoted to Reserve Driver.

Heading into 2013, Max became the latest and youngest in a prestigious line of British racing drivers to enter the exclusive world of Formula 1 as he secured his full race seat with Marussia, realising his dream to compete alongside the world’s elite at the pinnacle of racing. He helped them triumph over rivals Caterham in the Constructors Championship and throughout the year, using his uncanny gift of caring for his machinery, was able to set a World Record, finishing 19 of 19 races, the best finishing record for a rookie F1 driver, ever. He also achieved a highest place finish of 14th in Monaco and took the Team to Q2 alongside his teammate at the Belgium Grand Prix, the first time in the Anglo-Russian outfit’s history that it made it out of the first stage of Qualifying.

In January 2014, it was announced that Max was to retain his place with the Marussia F1 Team and take his seat in the new MR-03 Ferrari powered race car for 2014 and continued his impressive finishing record.  It was not until his 26th race in Canada that he experienced his first DNF.  A turbulent year followed with teammate Jules Bianchi’s terrible crash (Forze Jules!) and Marussia in financial difficulties eventually leading to them missing the final three races of the season.

In 2015 Max joined the ill-fated Nissan Nismo project in the highly acclaimed World Endurance Championship where he sadly had to retire in the 23rd hour of the famous Le Mans 24 hour race.  This would be the only event that Nissan would enter in the LMP1 category which although frustrating, provided Max with an opportunity to go to the US and support Carlin as they embarked on their American Indy Car Programme.  Max ended up doing three quarters of a full season and picked up 6 podiums, 3 poles, 2 fastest laps and a win at Iowa Speedway on his first even oval course.  This win triggered calls from numerous Verizon IndyCar teams and it wasn’t long before Max penned his signature onto a Chip Ganassi contract.  He is competing for the Ganassi team for a full IndyCar season and will partner reigning Champion Scott Dixon in the Chevrolet powered outfit.

The 2017 season saw Max demonstrate the progress he had made in the series, again teaming up with Chip Ganassi Racing for his second season.  The highlight of the year was 4th place at the 101st Indianapolis 500, with Max leading 50 laps, more than any other driver, to lose the lead with just five laps to go.

At the end of 2017, Max rejoined the Carlin team for their new Verizon IndyCar programme, reunited once again with former Ganassi team mate Charlie Kimball.  Using his two seasons of experience in the series and relationship with the team, Max plays a pivotal role in helping single-seater experts Carlin get up to speed quickly in their debut season.  Max is proud once again to carry the colours and branding of global insurance brokerage and risk management services firm  Gallagher on the No. 59 car in 2018.

Suffolk Vehicle Enthusiasts Club – February 2019

“Dear SVEC members.

I wish to compliment the services I have received from Bridge Classic Cars Restorers. I arranged to meet Gordon (Owner) at the Bridge Classic and Sports Car Show at Pettistree on the 26th August 2018. (As was advertised on a flyer in a summer newsletter) The upholstery on my 30 year old BMW 635CSi was in need of repair. The leather on the driver’s seat had perished and both front seats were in need of refurbishing and various pieces of trim within the cabin needed refitting.

I arrived at the show and parked in the Classic Car area and walked toward the showroom to find on-route, a replica of Dave Pearce’s 320 Superstock! That made me smile! I then walked to the showroom and was immediately impressed by not only the quality of the prestigious cars being restored, (XK, E Type Jag’s, Aston Martin’s…) but the immaculate state of both the showroom and workshops. The floors are spotless! And they did a good job!

The replacement biscuit coloured leather in my Beema has matched well with the original colour, it all fits well and although one of my requests to refit the upholstery to the driver’s door had been overlooked, my car was re-collected, the work was undertaken, returned to me and at no further cost. Honest business men!

I would also like to compliment Gordon’s son Craig who markets the company and has introduced updates on work being undertaken to your car online. Modern technology put to good use!

David White”

1929 Morris ‘Cowley’ Two Seater Tourer – by Roger Brown

‘If you attend Classic car shows and Village Fete’s around Woodbridge and surrounding districts, very often you would have seen this delightful vintage tourer on show there driven by its owner Rod Satchwell.

The Morris has a very interesting history. It was on of a batch sent by Morris Motors to Australia in the late 1920’s. there, the chassis was received by Holdens who manufactered the open two seat body you see on it today. The Morris is also unique in that it has a ‘rumble seat’ where normally the boot would be; unfortunately the ‘rumble seat’ will only take two small people comfortably or one adult uncomfortably.

Until the Morris was repatriated to the UK in 2008 the Morris had spent its entire life in Australia and is believed that the car had four owners prior to returning to the UK, also the exact mileage it covered during its life in Australia is also unknown.

Essentially it is a very simple car and is well within the capabilities of the 1920’s owner/driver to maintain and service. This is stated in the 1929 ‘Th Morris Car Manual’ and, if you have a chance to look at the Morris closely, you can see why the manufacturer could make this claim.

The engine is a very simple 1400cc four cylinder side valve unit rated at 11.9hp with a thermo-syphen cooling system. The engine temperature is indicated by a ‘Calormeter’, a visual temperature gauge mounted on top of the radiator; control of the water temperature is by mixture control on the steering column.

The gearbox is a three speed non-synchromesh with reverse gear. Gear changing is done very slowly. The clutch is depressed, the engaged gear is disengaged and the gear lever moves the next gear slowly into mesh; only then is the clutch released and the Morris moves on.

A notable feature of the car are the 10 spoke ‘Artillery’ wheels shod with ‘Dunlop balloon tyres.

All four wheels have brakes but the braking system rod actuated all round with the hand brake operating a separate pair of brake shoes on the rear brake drums.

Finally the suspension has cart springs all round with additional lever arm dampers to smooth the ride on 1920’s roads. A delightful car to see at shows and seen driven on the road.

Barons will auction off a pair of barn-find Jaguar E-type Series 2s during their July 17 auction at Sandown Park, offering an interesting prospect to those interested in a new project vehicle.

Expected to sell for £15,000-£20,000 apiece, the pair of Jags are a tempting purchase for anyone brave enough to take on the extensive restoration work required to bring them back to full health.

A 1969 manual example in red comes as a complete car with working engine but requires extensive body restoration, while a white 1970 automatic model with full-length Webasto sunroof comes with a triple-carburettor engine that needs an overhaul.

For those already working on an E-type project of their own, an entire bodyshell plus parts are being sold as a lot, expected to fetch around £6000-£10,000 come Tuesday.

Not every Jaguar E-type in this auction requires TLC aplenty, however. A matching numbers 1967 E-type Series 1.5 2+2 in Dark Blue, with 40,160 miles on the clock, is ready to drive away, MoT still in date. With no restoration needed in this case, £49,000 to £54,000 is expected to be where the winning bidder’s price will fall.

Barons has also embraced a summer theme for their July auction, with no less than 23 convertibles passing over their auction block on Tuesday.

A 22,300-mile 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280SL Pagoda imported from sunny Florida tops the convertibles billing with a £60,000-£80,000 estimate, which handily comes with its original hardtop to cope with more traditional British weather.

Those looking for something older will likely be interested in a 1925 Riley Redwing, believed to be one of only four ever built. It features a 1.5L 10.8hp side valve engine mated to a four-speed non-synchro gearbox capable of 70mph, or 90mph with a downhill stretch of road and tailwind!

Those less flush with cash still have plenty of lots worth considering. A 1960 Austin Mini fitted with an early Cooper Silver Seal 998cc engine is estimated to sell for £13,000-£16,000, while some cars are estimated to go for as little as £1500, should a V6-powered Rover 827 Sterling be of interest to you.
