Winners Circle – Lyle Taking Delivery of the 1967 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 Tribute

The Bridge Classic Cars Competitions team have delivered another dream classic to its new and excited owner.

Lyall Logan won our 1967 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 Tribute back in December with the winning ticket 6128. The car has recently finished having its last few bits and pieces done by our technicians at the Bridge Classic Cars workshop in Suffolk and this morning was delivered right to Lyle’s door.

The whole family came out to see the car. Lyall has wanted a classic Mustang since he was a boy so to make this dream car come true for someone is really special.

We wish Lyall and the family many happy miles and years cruising in this iconic convertible.

Find it Anywhere – Fitting a Tracker to the 1967 Ford Mustang GT350 Tribute

One of the requests that the new owner of the 1967 Ford Mustang GT350 Tribute has asked Bridge Classic Cars to carry out is organising the fitting of a tracker to the classic Mustang.

It’s now pretty commonplace to fit a tracker to a classic for insurance reasons and just for peace of mind. Bridge Classic Cars organised the tracker to be fitted by a specialist to the muscle car but our in-house restoration technicians prepared the car and under the dash for the installation.

Now with this complete, the car can be delivered to it’s new owner Lyle very soon!

The Right Direction – Fixing the Steering Coupler on the 1967 Ford Mustang GT350 Tribute

John, our workshop manager at Bridge Classic Cars has been working on the steering coupler of the 1967 Ford Mustang GT350 Tribute. On inspection, John found that the coupler which had been fitted was binding when the steering approached full lock. This would need attention.

John removed the original coupler and noted it had the incorrect sized coupler on one end and a selection of mismatched pieces on the other. So, because safety is paramount for any Bridge Classic Cars projects, John got a specially made new coupler specifically made for the car and its bespoke right-hand drive conversion. Now, with the new component in the car, John could begin to test. After checking and rechecking, the new piece worked perfectly and didn’t bind up the coupler.

This was always going to be a special car. The 1967 Ford Mustang is an icon of the car world. One of the most recognisable pieces of pop culture. But this one pays tribute to the cars high performance cousin. The infamous Shelby Mustang.

Just after the rain, comes the best light. Every surface reflects the soft sun and lights up a car in a way a lamp never could. So, with the conditions like these, Freddie and Charlotte dropped the top on this stunning car and headed for the taxiway. This car, is a homage to the great Shelby Mustangs of the 1960s. Except this one, is a bit more special than any of those ones. This particular car, has been converted to Right Hand Drive.

As the V8 rumbled through the airbase towards Freddie’s keen eye and sharp lens. The scene was set to capture the heart and soul of this American icon. This, is what you see right here.

Plugged In – Changing Spark Plugs on the 1967 Ford Mustang Convertible

This 1967 Ford Mustang Convertible is having a list of things done to it by Bridge Classic Cars in Suffolk, UK but next up on the jobs is a spark plug change.

Mauro, our in-house restoration technician, has been working deep in the engine bay of the Mustang. As you can see by the photos, the sparkplugs that were in the Mustang had been in there for quite some time. With that, it was decided to renew them as part of the refresh being done on the car. As with all old spark plugs, you need to be very careful as they can be quite fragile.

So, Mauro gently eased the plugs out of the cylinder head ready to be inspected. They were heavily corroded on the mounts and also the ground straps and electrodes were covered in carbon. New plugs it was for this unique muscle car. Mauro also decided to inspect and clean up the threads in the cylinder head ready for the new spark plugs.

With the new spark plugs in the car, it was just a case of getting the leads back on the car according to its firing order ready for when we first fire up the V8.

Sealed up Tight – Replacing the Pinion Seal on the 1967 Ford Mustang Convertible Rear End

Mauro, our in-house restoration technician, has been working on the 1967 Ford Mustang that we have in the Bridge Classic Cars workshop.

As part of its mechanical refresh recently, Mauro replaced the rear axle seals and now it’s time to renew the rear pinion seal. A key part of the well being of any rear-wheel drive car.

After removing the old seal and inspecting the mounting surfaces, Mauro then put the new seal in place and check the pinion worked correctly. It all worked perfectly. So with that, the driveshaft and coupling were put back in place and it was time to move on to the next job on the list…

Stop and Go – Replacing Wheel Cylinders and Axle Seals on the 1967 Ford Mustang

Our technician Mauro has been waiting on some parts for the 1967 Ford Mustang Convertible for some time now. These parts have all had to be sourced from the US so there is bound to be a bit of a wait for them.

The car was assessed and inspected so that all the parts could be ordered in one go but first on the list is the rear axle seals and wheel cylinders. Mauro had noted down a small leak coming from the rear axle and while the rear drums have to be removed for the axles to come out, we thought it best practice to service the rear brakes. In all, their condition was fine. The shoes had plenty of material and all the hardware looked straight and in good order.

So, Mauro decided that just the wheel cylinders would need replacement. As we got the axle out, the backing plates off the drums it was time to pull the old leaking seals out. Carefully, Mauro removed the old seals and prepped the area to receive the brand new seals. They went in perfectly.

Working back out, Mauro began to put the drums back together. As he did, he replaced the wheel cylinders and bled the system. So now, there’s just one more job to do on the back end of the Mustang…

Breathing New Life – Preparing the Rocker Covers on a 1967 Ford Mustang for Paint

With American V8s the first thing you notice in the engine bay is the Rocker Covers.

One of the most iconic of these is the historic ”Cobra by Ford” covers that graced the tops of some of the most legendary race and sportscar engines the American continent has ever produced.

Our 1967 Ford Mustang has got these very covers fitted on top of its small-block V8. These covers will be refinished in-house by our paint and body teams to make sure that when they go back on, they look just like, if not better, than the day they were fitted.

On the Straight and Narrow – Looking into the Steering on our 1967 Ford Mustang

This 1967 Ford Mustang isn’t like many others. This is a right-hand drive 1967 Ford Mustang.

That does make refurbishing the suspension and steering systems a little bit trickier. But, it’s nothing our in-house restoration technicians can’t handle. The conversion was done on the car prior to its history with ourselves, apparently done during the vehicles life done in the Phillipines.

Our Technician, Paul, has been slowly taking apart the steering rack in preparation to be rebuilt along with its suspension set up.

We are currently sourcing replacement pieces for the vehicle thanks to the detailed nature of the assessment on each component of this unique Mustang.

Ford Mustang – researching parts

It’s proving a bit of a challenge sourcing parts for our 1967 Ford Mustang right hand drive converted classic. Many suppliers across the UK are eager and willing to help us find replacement parts but as you would imagine, a lot of original components have had to change as part of the conversion. Parts begged, stolen and borrow from other vehicles…like the Vauxhall Cavalier steering rack.

Through a good friend and colleague of ours, John from Norfolk Brake and Clutch Specialists, we have a guy able to overhaul the steering rack. Fantastic news as this was our first major obstacle.

Now we are speaking with Mustang specialists from all over the UK to help us on our recommission journey.

Who would’ve thought a classic Mustang would be so challenging!

Steering rack over-haul.

After Paul did inspection work on the 1967 Ford Mustang 350, one of the first things that are being done is that the steering rack is being sent off to be over-hauled, after it was found to be leaking at the seals.

Paul has been giving our 1967 Ford Mustang 350 a thorough check over and noting down any issues he does find. So far, he’s found that the wheels aren’t sitting quite right and there’s a leak coming from the underside that needs further investigation work.

The electronic ignition was the issue with the Mustang not starting upon collection. John has worked his magic and now she’s all fired up!

We still can’t go anywhere as we have no brakes…well we can go places, we just can’t stop!

Rarer than a galloping rocking horse s***…

Being around classic cars all day, everyday they all have a story to tell and we love to hear about them.

The history, the life that the car has had and the owners that have sat in the seats all make up a great story.

We see and work on a lot of rare cars. When we heard of the rarity of latest addition we couldn’t wait to get our hands on it. This may look like any regular 1967 Ford Mustang but look closely…something seems to be in the wrong place! Some would argue that it’s a much better place but the purests might not agree.

Believed to have been converted to right hand drive in the Philippines some years, once we delve deeper into the car’s history we will be able to build a bigger picture of the car’s exciting life up to now!

For now…we have collected the car and is safe with us in the workshops awaiting further updates.
