Winners Circle – Our 1989 TVR S2 at Home with its New Owner

The 1989 TVR S2, which was donated by previous winner Jar Joyce, has been delivered to its new owner Brian Swain.

This classic TVR was donated by Jar back to Bridge Classic Cars Competitions to help support the DEC Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal. Through everyone’s kindness and generosity, we managed to raise over £38,000 which was donated weekly directly to the DEC in order to help those first-hand affected by the invasion and subsequent destruction and displacement.

All of us here wish Brian many happy miles and years with the classic TVR and again, thank you to everyone for taking part in this amazing charity appeal.

Final Donation – Fifth Donation and Total Raised for the DEC Ukrainian Humanitarian Appeal

The final donation for the DEC Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal has been sent from Bridge Classic Cars Competitions from our 1989 TVR S2 competition.

The total amount raised has also been calculated and it is over £38,500! An incredible amount which as gone directly to the DEC to help the people of Ukraine during the invasion and the displacement of those affected.

We just want to say a massive thank you from all of us at Bridge Classic Cars to everyone who entered and has massively helped those affected in Ukraine.

Inspection – Inspecting the 1989 TVR S2 2.9

The restoration team at the Bridge Classic Cars have begun their inspection of the 1989 TVR S2 after its live draw last week.

Paul, one of our restoration technicians, gave the car a complete check over and compiled a list of parts that will need to be replaced. Paul found that the starter motor in the classic TVR must be removed and rebuilt for the car and along with that a replacement of some of the fuel lines due to some cracks starting to appear in the surface of the material.

Paul also found that several of the ball joints would also need attention before it leaves our workshop.

Behind the Scenes – Live Draw of the Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal 1989 TVR S2 & 1990 Porsche 944 Turbo

Last night, the Bridge Classic Cars Competitions team and a load of our friends all got together to find the new lucky owners of two dream classics and one of them, was for a very special cause.

For the past few weeks, we have been raising much-needed funds in support of the DEC Ukrainian Humanitarian Appeal. This all started when a previous Bridge Classic Cars Competitions winner saw the situation in Ukraine coming to light after the invasion and the devastation and displacement it had caused to the people of Ukraine. So, Jar decided to get in touch and asked us to put the 1989 TVR S2 back into competition with 100% of the proceeds going directly every week to the DEC Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal. Thanks to your help, support and involvement plus the help from amazing companies such as Hagerty UK, Car & Classic, Classic and Sportscar Magazine and countless others across the industry, at 7 pm last night we raised a total of just over £38,500!

An amazing amount that will go a long way to help those needlessly and senselessly caught up in the conflict/invasion.

The other dream classic to be won was the incredible 1990 Porsche 944 Turbo. This car has one of the most extensive history folders we have ever come across. Detailed correspondence from the previous owner with the specialist who undertook all work on the classic Porsche, parts lists, turbo specification, dyno printouts and, its feature in the April 2017 issue of Practical Classics magazine.

So, with everyone eagerly awaiting the draw, the team began by firing up the random number generator to find out just who the lucky new owners of these beauties were. First was the 944.

This was a very popular competition with nearly all of the 3888 tickets going in just over a week. As Hayley did a few test runs of the random number generator for everyone in the room and at everyone watching along on the live stream, the tension rose.

Hayley entered the criteria between 1 and 3888. With a single click and a whir of numbers on the big screen, it was decided. Ticket number 770. This belonged to Lee Brown. The new owner of the 1990 Porsche 944 Turbo.

Then, it was time to find out who had not only donated to the Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal but also entered to win the 1989 TVR S2. Hayley reset the random number generator. And with a flash on the screen, the future of the car had been decided. It would now belong to Brian Swain with ticket 346.

Fourth Donation – Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal TVR S2

The team at Bridge Classic Cars Competitions have sent over the latest donation from our 1989 TVR S2 competition which is in aid of the DEC Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal.

The total is now £31,000 which will be going directly to help support those who have been affected and displaced by the conflict unfolding across Ukraine. Every penny from this competition will be donated to the appeal and help the people of Ukraine.

First Donation – Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal 1989 TVR S2

The first round of donations has been sent to the Disasters Emergency Committee’s Ukraine Appeal from our 1989 TVR S2 competition.

Jar has selflessly donated the car for this appeal in order to raise as much as possible to help the people of Ukraine directly affected by the invasion. Behind the Scenes – Live Draw of the 1952 MG TD & 1973 MGB GT V8

Last night, March 10th 2022 saw the Bridge Classic Cars Competitions find out not only who the lucky new owners for the 1952 MG TD and 1973 MGB GT V8 were but we also launched a very special competition that is close to our hearts and has such an amazing story which will go on to help and support people most in need right now.

On the live stream to our Facebook page, we welcomed those who tune in every week and some new names. The first order of business was to unveil the latest competition.

A 1989 TVR S2 2.9 has been amazingly donated by its owner Jar Joyce. Jar had been so moved by the Humanitarian Crisis in Ukraine that he felt compelled to do the most he could. Jar had won the TVR from us in October, and a few days ago got in touch with us to help him use the car to raise funds and awareness for the situation the Ukrainian people have been forced into. In Jar’s own words ”I have had a very lucky life and now I would like to share my luck with those who need it most.”, so we will be drawing this 1989 TVR S2 at the end of April with 100% of the proceeds going straight to the Disasters Emergency Committee who are working with the Ukrainian people to support and help in so many worthwhile and incredible ways.

After Craig had gone through the details of this wonderful, heartfelt appeal on behalf of Jar and all of us here at Bridge Classic Cars, it was time to run the live draw of these two classic sports cars.

First up, was the beautiful Acconite purple 1973 MGB GT V8. Hayley, using the random number generator, input the numbers. The odds for this car were fantastic as by the time the competition closed, a few hundred of the 4666 tickets were remaining. So, with one click of a button, the next owner of the BGT V8 was decided. 1602. That number had been the single ticket bought and allocated to Richard Holland. The lucky new owner of this stunning V8 sports car.

Next was the 1952 MG TD. A very special car with again, fantastic odds for all those who entered. Just under 300 tickets remained from the 1999 tickets allowed for this competition. Hayley reset the random number generator for between 1 and 1999 and with a single click, the fate of the TD was decided. 1476 appeared on the screen. This particular ticket was again a single ticket bought by a long time player with Bridge Classic Cars Competitions, Alan Cockerill.

Final Checks – Checking the Alternator on the 1989 TVR S2 2.9

The 1989 TVR S2 which was won through Bridge Classic Cars Competitions has left the secure storage facility, The Hangar, on its way to its new home with its new owner, Jarlath. But, before it goes anywhere our in-house restoration technicians just want to check something.

When the car was pulled out of The Hangar, the alternator light was showing on the dash. This unit had been replaced during its preparation so Tom and John decided to go through and double-check the charging system. Methodically, our restoration teams worked through each component and wire.

After investigating, John and Tom found that one of the connectors had been slightly dirty/corroded was the cause of the light on the dashboard of this vibrant red sports car. After this had been cleaned and tested, all was ok and ready for delivery.

The Winners Circle – TVR S2 2.9 V6 Has a New Owner

10 o’clock yesterday morning. Charlotte drew the winning number of 2343 and that happened to be this man. Jarlath Joyce. When we went to call him during the live stream it went to answerphone but as we found he wasn’t too far away.

When we called him later in the day to explain he was now the new owner of the 1989 TVR S2 2.9 V6, we discovered he was only in Felixstowe! So, it was arranged for himself and his wife to come down to the workshop in Pettistree to view their prize.

Behind The Scenes – Live Draw of the 1989 TVR S2 2.9 V6

A bit of a change to our usual schedule, the live draw for the 1989 TVR S2 2.9 V6 was drawn during the day this time. A start time of 10 am saw many tuned in from home to find out if they were the lucky winner of this bright red bruiser.

The car itself was being valeted by Viper Auto Valet as we set up for the draw. All three of the latest competition cars were put into place for Charlotte and Freddie to guide the viewers through what to expect in the coming weeks.

As the random number generator span away. It was ticket 2343. After cross-checking the number against the entry lists (which are published on our website before each draw) it was found to be Jarlath Joyce who was now the new owner of this 1989 TVR S2 2.9 V6.

Boots on the Ground – Tyre Change on the 1989 TVR S2 2.9 V6

One of the key parts of any classic sportscar is handling. That playful, light-handed feeling whilst out on a spirited drive where the car becomes an extension of the driver.

Because of this, we felt it best practice to change the rubber that meets the road on our sensational 1989 TVR S2 2.9 V6. The tyres that were fitted to the car were perfectly fine, however, they had been fitted several years before so it was time for some new shoes for this delightful piece of British engineering.

For all of our tyre changes, we use Tyre Assist. They come out to us and are well versed in working on classic and vintage cars across East Anglia.

Raising the Roof – Revitalising the hood on our 1989 TVR S2 2.9

Our incredibly talented in-house trim expert Brian has been working on the roof of the 1989 TVR SII. The old roof had begun to look quite tired and had sun-bleached in places.

Brian worked his magic on the material of the roof and the removable panels to give this convertible a new lease of life.

TVR’s seized seat

The driver’s seat on our 1989 TVR SII 2.9 V6 was reported as not being able to move on the runners, so Paul took it out to have an investigation. He found that the bottom of the seat frame had completely rotten away, so the driver would have been basically sitting on the floor of the car! He also found that the lever that tilts the “squab” backwards and forwards was seized. He worked his magic on the lever and then passed it over to Brian in the trim shop to finish. Once the covers were taken off, Brian re-painted the frame and put strips of Pirelli rubber webbing across the base of the frame, attaching new springs on the ends to hold it in place. A new piece of foam was also attached to the existing foam for the base seat. The covers could then go back on the frame, ready for the seat to go back in the TVR. Great teamwork guys.

More tidying-up of the TVR.

After having a new clear PVC window sewn into the original hood of the 1989 TVR SII 2.9 V6, the rest of the roof needed a bit of attention. The two panels that create the roof in front of the hood has black vinyl covering the underneath. This had various cracks running throughout due to age and wear and it was coming unstuck at the edges. The first decision made was to try and re-glue the edges down, clean off the dirt below the edges of the vinyl, try and glue the cracks together and paint any non-black edges, to take a sympathetic approach so it fitted in with the wear and tear of the rest of the car. However, after Lydia started to try this approach, she wasn’t happy with the results so decided to take the old worn-out vinyl off and start again. Before the vinyl was taken off, the rubbers were peeled off very carefully and with a blade where it was tricky to do by hand. Any remaining glue that was left on the fibreglass was sanded off and cracks in the fibreglass were filled. 3mm foam was cut out and glued on first, making sure to press into the edges and corners to get the shaping right. New black vinyl was then cut out, using the original pieces as patterns. The vinyl was glued over the 3mm foam and pressed into the edges and corners again. You can see in the photos below where the original vinyl was coming away from these edges, which is why it was so important to make those edges as sharp as possible. Lydia went around the sides of the panels to make sure the exposed edges of vinyl looked neat, trimming along the way with a blade. The last step was to re-glue the rubbers on.

Finished TVR Hood and a General Tidy-Up.

Kath has now finished repairing the hood on the 1989 TVR SII 2.9 V6. In the last blog post, we heard about how she was removing the old PVC window out of the hood, because of it becoming delaminated and coming out of the seam at the corners. She used the original as a pattern to mark out around and cut out on a sheet of new clear PVC. Once cut out, Kath applied contact adhesive to the outside edge of the PVC and slotted it in between the layers of hood fabric at the seam edge and left it to dry. She could then sew down the same lines where the previous stitching was to fully secure the window into place. New leather strips were sewn onto the corners. The hood could then be glued to its frame. The vertical bars on the hood frame that is attached to the car had flaking black paint on them. So these were sanded down and then re-painted. The pieces that hold the hood in place at the front and where the front roof panels slot into it, had flaking paint on them too, so these got re-painted in the same manner. The hood could then be attached to the car again. Kath also reglued various pieces of fabric that were coming away around the inside of the TVR.

This involved taking out the metal plates that are on the front, and slot it into place when it’s up. The rubber seal was removed next, in order to start taking the fabric of the hood off the foam on the middle bar of the frame. Kath scraped the old glue off the foam. The removed hood was placed on a table and another bar was removed from it, before unpicking the old PVC window from the surrounding fabric. The old foam and glue that was left on the fabric was then scraped off. Tomorrow, Kath will be cutting out the new window from clear PVC and stitching into place, making sure to go through the same original stitch holes.

TVR SII Arrives For Restorative Works

Here at Bridge Classic Cars, we have just purchased this 1989 TVR SII 2.9 V6. The previous owner had become very unwell, so the car ended up being left to go into a state of disrepair. That owner was Leonard Smith and he has sadly passed away this week. He was part of the TVR Car Club.

We’re looking to tidy it up considerably and bring it back to its former glory. We’ve started by getting our valet, Colin, to detail the car in order to see any damage properly, after being left to get grubby over time. We’ve decided to order a new hood for it because it was too far gone to repair, and the interior needs a general tidy up, parts coming unstuck, etc.

While we were there picking up the TVR, we also spotted a couple of other classic cars in the same storage space, owned by other people. We took photos of a black 1951 Jaguar Mark V Saloon and a bronze 1981 MGB Roadster. You can see why they caught our eye!
