1962 TVR Grantura Racecar

Tucked away in a chicken shed in Suffolk was this very special 1962 TVR Grantura.

Registered to TVR in 1962, this vehicle was raced with an MGA engine until the engine failed. It was taken back to TVR’s factory and changed to a sunbeam rapier engine that is still in place to this day.

Originally adorned in the TVR race colours of white with blue stripes. It’s been painted different colours over the years and is now in a lovely deep claret.

BEM885 was raced very successfully in the early 60s and as a part of the rich history of the car comes it’s various race entries and wins.

It was raced initially by Arne Lambe and W R Bennet. It was later hill climbed by Geoff Taylor. It was regularly seen in the early 80s at Prescott when it was owned by Douglas Mainstone.

BEM885 can be seen in the image below being raced in her original livery at Southport in 1963.

We do not believe the car was raced at Goodwood, but should be eligible for the Fordwater.

To be eligible for the FIA events it will probably have to be fitted with a 1588cc MGA engine, which is a shame as it has had the Alpine engine since 1962.

This is no normal Grantura, being a racing car, It also has lightweight features (such as a drilled chassis for weight reduction!), another part of this cars rich and interesting history.

The chassis number indicates it was built in 1961.
